Snail Blazers: The Slow and Steady Walking Group Making Big Strides in Buxton

Tucked in the heart of Buxton, the Snail Blazers are proving that when it comes to walking, it’s not about speed—it’s about connection, health, and enjoying the journey. This friendly, slow-paced walking group meets every other Wednesday for short strolls designed to support physical and mental wellbeing, wrapping up each outing with a good brew and a friendly natter.
Originally formed as part of Buxton Parish, the Snail Blazers have since stepped out on their own to create a more inclusive and welcoming space for people from all walks of life. The group is especially suited to those who face physical or mental health challenges that make traditional walking groups feel out of reach.
Thanks to ongoing support from High Peak CVS and Time Swap, the Snail Blazers have grown from a local parish group into a constituted organisation. Recently, the group secured grant funding to expand their horizons—literally. With the addition of a minibus, members will soon be exploring walking routes beyond Buxton, discovering new landscapes together. They’ve also introduced litter picking into their activities, adding a feel-good dose of environmental care to their mission.
“Snail Blazers is an all-inclusive group and I love that about it!” Says Deb, one of the group’s organisers. “Some member are living with physical barriers, others really struggle with making social connections and some care for loved ones and become isolated. Snail Blazers provides these people with a relaxed caring safe space to enjoy the outdoors while staying connected with the community.”
