New Mills Volunteer Centre Launches Accessible Walks to Combat Isolation

As the days grow longer and the countryside bursts into colour, New Mills Volunteer Centre is inviting locals to lace up their shoes and join a new series of monthly summer walks designed to bring people together, boost wellbeing, and tackle social isolation.
These accessible walks — all under 2 miles, with no stiles and gentle, well-maintained paths — offer a chance for people of all ages and abilities to get out in nature without pressure or barriers. What’s more, minibus transport is provided to each walk’s start point, making it easy for everyone to take part. But places go quickly, so early booking is essential!
Here’s where the summer will take us:
- 8th May – Macclesfield Forest
- 12th June – Eyam
- 10th July – Bamford
- 7th August – Middlewood Way
- 11th September – Tideswell
- 9th October – Lyme Park
Each destination has been carefully chosen for its beauty, accessibility, and the chance to enjoy a breath of fresh air in good company. But more than just a walk, these outings are a powerful step toward building connection and community.
“Walking is one of the most natural ways to meet new people,” says Mark, Centre Manager at New Mills Volunteer Centre. “It gives people a chance to talk, share, and connect in a relaxed setting. For those feeling isolated, it can be a lifeline.”
These walks are part of the Centre’s broader mission to reduce loneliness and support mental wellbeing throughout High Peak. And it’s working — participants often say it’s not just the scenery, but the friendships they form along the way, that make the biggest impact.

No matter your age or ability, there’s something special about walking in good company. We’d love to hear from others across the High Peak who are organising their own walks, nature meetups, or any other outdoor activities.
Let’s celebrate the ways we stay healthy, connected, and inspired in our beautiful green spaces.
