Everyday Walking
Regular walking can help your physical and mental health and reduce the risk factors for a number of diseases including some types of cancer, type II diabetes and coronary heart disease, and it can help reduce the risk of dementia.
The NHS lists walking as a simple, low-cost method to improve your health and wellbeing and offers advice to those who are inactive and wish to add walking into their daily routine or increase the amount that they do.
Whether you want a social walk to improve connections and confidence or just a chat and a cuppa with other local residents; a health walk to help with lowering blood pressure and maintaining a healthy weight; to help with your mental health – reducing anxiety and improving sleep; or if you want to walk on your own, out in nature or exploring the history of your local area – there are walks across the High Peak to suit all levels and all needs including self-guided walks and a number of walking groups.
Walk Derbyshire
Walk Derbyshire want to make everyday walking the norm and want more people to enjoy walking and its benefits. They offer advice, support and information to organisations and individuals running walks, including training and supporting walk leaders, whilst also offering a place to search for walks in your local area and an app to see walks local to you on your phone.
Active Trails
Around the High Peak there are many active trails in parks and other spaces, with maps and routes to explore. Visit the Active trails page for those currently available in some of your local parks – more are being developed.
Self-guided walks
Many of the towns around the High Peak have their own self guided walking trails and maps – some are available online, others have been developed by Friends of Stations groups and can be picked up in local stations. There are a number of local history trails such as the one in Whaley Bridge that can be picked up at the Mechanics Institute. Many towns and villages also run seasonal trails or walks as part of events, including Buxton’s Flowerpot and Garden Trails, and New Mills Festival Walks.
Walking groups & organised walks
Several organisations in High Peak organise led walks – either weekly or during the summer months. Details are normally on their web pages or available by visiting the venue. New Mills Volunteer Centre, The Bureau Glossop, Grapevine and Zink in Buxton are just some of the voluntary sector organisations who run walking groups. Some of their staff and volunteers have been trained through Move More High Peak and Walk Derbyshire’s Walk Leader programme and new opportunities to train as a walk leader to run local walks are available.
