Live More: David’s Story

Swimming, routine and staying connected
Staying active has always mattered to me. I have cerebral palsy, and swimming has been part of my life from a young age. When I was younger, I swam competitively and was proud to represent Great Britain at the Paralympics. Swimming gave me confidence, purpose and a real sense of achievement, and that connection has stayed with me ever since.
These days, swimming is still a big part of how I look after myself. I take part in Zink or Swim sessions at Buxton Leisure Centre, and I swim regularly. It’s something I genuinely enjoy — it helps me stay fit, gives structure to my week, and gives me something positive to focus on.
Getting into the pool helps me feel good physically, but it also gives me a sense of routine — turning up each week, doing something familiar, and feeling like I’m keeping myself going.
More than just fitness
Swimming isn’t just about physical health for me. One of the things I value most is the social side. I see the same people regularly, have a chat, and feel part of a group. That sense of connection really matters.
Over the years, I’ve been involved with swimming clubs and have taught many people how to swim. Helping others build confidence in the water has been incredibly rewarding and has helped me feel useful, valued and involved.

Keeping active together
Being active through swimming helps me feel confident and positive. It’s a space where everyone is welcome, and where staying active feels supportive rather than pressured. Turning up, getting in the water, and sharing that time with others keeps me motivated.
For me, swimming is about more than exercise — it’s about community, confidence and keeping active in a way that feels enjoyable and sustainable. Whether it’s through structured sessions or swimming alongside others, it’s something I can keep doing week after week, and that makes all the difference.
