Live More: Jaymie’s Story

Finding confidence, connection and strength through being active
For a long time, my life felt chaotic. I’d been a drug addict for over 20 years, and I was in a really bad place — physically and mentally. I’d spent time in hospital and had serious health problems, and when I started recovery, everything felt overwhelming.
That’s when I was recommended Recovery Through Nature — and coming here has been life‑changing for me. This project gives me a safe space where I can just be myself. There’s no judgement, no stigma — just people who understand. I come every week, and it’s something I really look forward to.
We stay active in ways that feel natural and enjoyable, like gardening, building things, and working outdoors. I’ve learned new skills I never thought I’d be able to do — when I first came, I couldn’t even read instructions properly, and now I’m helping put up greenhouses.
Building confidence through movement
Being active here has done wonders for my confidence. It’s helped me build strength again after being unwell, and it’s had a huge impact on my mental health. Every time I come, I feel better — more capable, more confident, and more positive.
Just being outside, moving my body, and doing something productive makes a real difference. It helps me feel like I’m moving forward.

Moving forward
This project has shown me how powerful being active can be, not just for physical health, but for mental wellbeing and recovery too. For anyone in a similar situation, I’d say this: you don’t have to do everything at once. Just start somewhere. Ask for help. Find a space where you feel safe.
For me, being active here has helped me rebuild my life — one step at a time.
