Live More: Sheila & Sue’s Story

Finding confidence & improving balance
We’re Sheila and Sue, and for the last few months we’ve been taking part in Nordic Walking. We both live with long‑term health conditions — problems with our knees, back and balance — and before joining the group, even low‑level activity felt difficult or unsafe.
We both knew we needed to move more to support our health, but we didn’t know where to start. Walking on our own was hard, and sometimes we avoided going out completely because of pain, stiffness or not feeling steady on our feet. Nordic Walking gave us a safe way to be active again.
From our very first session, using the poles made a huge difference. They gave us stability, reduced pressure on our joints and helped us feel more confident in our bodies.
Activity that supports our health — at the right pace
What we love most is that Nordic Walking is gentle, low‑level movement that still brings real benefits. We can go at our own speed, take breaks when we need to, and build up gradually without feeling like we’re pushing too hard.
Over the weeks, we’ve both noticed improvements; Less stiffness and better mobility; feeling more supple and able to manage day‑to‑day movement; and improved mood and wellbeing
It’s not just about activity — it’s about support and connection. Living alone, health conditions can sometimes feel isolating. The group has changed that for both of us. Everyone is friendly, welcoming and understanding. No one judges your pace. No one is left behind. There’s laughter every week, and the social side has been just as important to our health as the physical activity.

If we had to describe our experience in three words? Friendly. Scenic. Invigorating.
Our message to anyone living with a long‑term condition and thinking of trying it: Take that first small step. There’s no pressure, no expectations — just a gentle, supported way to move more and feel better. It’s made a huge difference to us, and it could do the same for you.
